Sidelit Snowdrifts in the Rocky Mountains

My work has been evolving over time.

I used to stress-out over a lack of fine-motor skills and dexterity.  The smaller the details, the more I got stressed.  Tight-niggly-wiggly shapes weren't turning out like what I had intended aesthetically.  Eventually, my 11x14 inch gouache paintings done on-location were becoming more satisfying for me as I mastered my brushstrokes to a level that included fewer annoying shapes beyond my control.  Nonetheless, I yearned for far-more SIMPLIFIED compositions to allow the nuanced fields of color that had become my intent, while the level of "detail" that I was continuing to make in my paintings became decreasingly satisfying.

I recently began working at a larger scale in my studio, shifting to an 18x24 inch format for my gouache on paper paintings.  OMG --- suddenly, the sense of scale of my paintings were exactly matched to my level of dexterity, and I began using much LARGER brushes.  This resulted in far-simpler shapes and compositions.  My sense of color relationships and compositional intent became harmonious and deeply satisfying for me as an artist.

This painting of mountains, snow and trees in the area near Crested Butte, Colorado is deeply satisfying for me.  My artwork is finally a direct expression of my intent as an artist.
